III. 定語從句應(yīng)注意的問題補充

1. 有時候一個先行詞由兩個定語從句限制，這叫雙重限制或多層修飾。

Is there anything else you'd like that you don't see on the shelves?

有別的任何你想要的卻在架子上你看不到的東西嗎？

There was one thing he told me which I don't believe .

有一件他告訴我但我不相信的事情。

2. 為了加強語氣，有時先行詞可用不同的詞語或代詞重復(fù)，形成一個同位語結(jié)構(gòu)。

People wore their summer clothes, the clothes they had gone to work in .

人們穿著夏裝，穿著他們上班去時穿的衣服。

Beijing is the capital of China, a city we all want to visit again and again .

北京是中國的首都，一個我們都想再三瀏覽的城市。

Jack is a good student, one we all should learn from .

杰克是個好學(xué)生，一個我們都應(yīng)該向其學(xué)習(xí)的學(xué)生。

3. 一個先行詞其后跟有兩個并列的定語從句時，第二個從句須重復(fù)相應(yīng)的關(guān)系代詞。

This practice book is intended for foreign engineers who have already mastered the elements of English, and who now want to use their knowledge of the language to read books on their own subjects.

這本實用手冊是為那些已經(jīng)掌握了英語基礎(chǔ)以及現(xiàn)在想用這種知識來讀自己專業(yè)書的外國工程師準(zhǔn)備的。

4. 引導(dǎo)并列定語從句的關(guān)系代詞在定語從句中作賓語時，第一個從句的關(guān)系代詞可以省略，但是引導(dǎo)第二個從句的關(guān)系代詞不能省略。

The house (which) he bought in 1968, and which he sold two years later, is again on the market.

他1968年買進，兩年后又賣出的那座房子現(xiàn)在又在售了。

5. 如果并列定語從句是由不同的關(guān)系代詞引導(dǎo)，第二個定語從句的關(guān)系代詞通?？偸怯脀h-詞。

She bought many houses that were not only better than what I had bought, but which were cheaper.

她買了很多房子，不僅比我買的好，也比我買的便宜。

6. “介詞+which”可以引導(dǎo)非限制性不定式定語從句。

I had nothing on which to focus .

I had nothing on which I can focus.

=I had nothing to focus on .

我沒有任何可專注的事情。
