Current Time, a Russian-language news channel that is part of the congressionally funded network Radio Free Europe, posted a letter on Monday from Russia’s justice ministry that said it would classify it as a foreign agent.
The letter said that Russian law allowed it to pass measures against media from countries that restricted the work of Russian media.
The justice ministry’s threat comes as the Kremlin considers a response to increased pressure in the US on Russia’s English-language propaganda networks, the TV channel RT and the news agency Sputnik.
The FBI is pressing RT and Sputnik to register as foreign agents in the US, according to Margarita Simonyan, who edits both.
Ms Simonyan said last week that RT’s US staff were leaving “en masse” because “people are scared, people are afraid” of US action and warned that the channel might have to shut its US operations. The Kremlin said that Russian media were subject to “unprecedented pressure” and vowed to respond.
Calls for restrictions against RT and Sputnik have grown stronger since US intelligence agencies accused them of contributing to a Kremlin “influence campaign” aimed at boosting Donald Trump, now US president, against Hillary Clinton, his opponent.
RT and Sputnik, which have a sizeable contingent of US staff, claim they are simply amplifying voices ignored by US media.
