The secretary told me that Mr. Harmsworth wouldsee me. I felt very nervous when I went into hisoffice. He did not look up from his desk when Ientered. After I had sat down, he said thatbusiness was very bad. He told me that the firmcould not afford to pay such large salaries.Twenty people had already left. I knew that myturn had come. ‘Mr. Harmsworth,' I said in a weakvoice. ‘Don't interrupt,' he Said. Then he smiled and told me I would receive an extra&100 a year!

4.After I had sat down, he said that business was very bad.

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn)1 此句中after引導(dǎo)時(shí)間狀語(yǔ)從句。had sat down是過(guò)去的過(guò)去發(fā)生的動(dòng)作，用過(guò)去完成時(shí)。

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn)2 主句he said that..，變成直接引語(yǔ)為：he said,“Business is very bad.”

他告訴我說(shuō)，公司現(xiàn)在無(wú)力支付這么巨額的工資。

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn)1 此句中包含典型的間接引語(yǔ)，that引導(dǎo)的間接引語(yǔ)為賓語(yǔ)從句。'

有20個(gè)人已經(jīng)被迫離開(kāi)了公司。

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn) already意為“已經(jīng)”，該詞經(jīng)常與完成時(shí)態(tài)連用，強(qiáng)調(diào)結(jié)果：Have you finished your composition already?你已經(jīng)完成作文了嗎?
